Community Sports Pitch

Introduction
Boiler House is a community space in Hackney, London, established in 2010, with the vision to deepen local relationships and opportunities within a safe and positive environment. Boiler House Spaces is not just a community centre; it is a space where people from all different backgrounds can connect, by promoting health and wellbeing, maximising the use of local spaces, creating links between individuals and delivering programmes that sustain integration and community cohesion.
Area of installation
Brief
The centre had plans to create a community garden and a new sports pitch that would benefit the wider community, by providing facilities that local people can use. They already had a Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) but wanted to create a larger pitch that would facilitate larger teams. This would mean having a new MUGA installed onto an empty space that would have otherwise not been used and extending onto their existing car park.
Project Details
As the new community sports pitch was being installed half onto a grass area and half onto a tarmac playground, we installed base works onto the soil to ensure an even surface for the artificial grass, to prevent it feeling un-even underfoot. We the installed Artificial Sports Grass to create the pitch, using Multi-Play Artificial Grass to create the football lines (in white) and the basketball markings (in red).
Around the pitch, we installed 868 Twin Wire Mesh Fencing with a single access gate. As this is a community space net to a busy road, we installed the fencing at 4m high to prevent balls being kicked over. To further ensure this, we added pitch retainer netting over the top of the MUGA. To maximize the space available, we incorporated the goal posts into the mesh fencing itself, by adding white posts and mesh within their green perimeter fencing to create goals for football matches, then attached Basketball Hoops at either end
Result
Boiler House Spaces now has a new Multi-Use Games Area that provides the local community with a fantastic facility – somewhere they can implement their values by encouraging people to socialise, connect and build their confidence through sports. We are incredibly proud to have been part of this project, and can’t wait to see the positive impact that it has for the people of Hackney.
