School-Based Nursery Capital Grant: what does this mean?

High-quality early education is essential for giving children the best start in life - to support early education expansion, the UK government has announced the School-Based Nursery Capital Grant. This is a funding opportunity for primary schools in England to apply for up to £150,000 to increase nursery provision in their premises.

Who can apply for this grant?

Eligible schools include state-funded primary-phase schools in England that already offer some form of early education, such as a reception class. These schools can apply for funding to repurpose surplus space in their buildings to create or expand nursery facilities. Although maintained nursery and special schools cannot apply, they are encouraged to register their interest for future opportunities. This funding comes as part of the government’s long-term commitment to early education by making use of underutilized school spaces, particularly in areas of high need.

How can the funding be used?

The School-Based Capital Grant allows schools to apply for a one-off grant up to £150,000 to convert or upgrade existing school space to make them suitable for early education. This includes enhancing outdoor areas, such as playgrounds and outside learning spaces, as well as improving the connection between indoor and outdoor spaces to enrich children's learning environments.

The funding is focused on capital expenses and cannot be used for day-to-day operational costs, such as staff salaries or general maintenance.

Application process and deadlines

The application portal opens October 17th 2024, with all applications submitted by December 19th 2024. Schools must secure support from the local authority and have the necessary approvals before applying. Successful applicants will be notified by Spring 2025, with the goal of making new nursery spaces operational by September for the academic year 2025/2026.

This funding represents a valuable opportunity for schools to broaden their reach by offering early education options for young children. For more details and to start an application, schools can access the online portal or reach out to the Department for Education's support teams.
