Introduction

Our Lady & St Werburgh’s Catholic Primary School in Newcastle under Lyme, Staffordshire, is a school that caters to children from Early Years through to Key Stage 2. The school is committed to encouraging a love of learning, building strong values of kindness, respect and perseverance, and helping every child reach their full potential. Outdoor play and active learning are key elements of their approach, providing pupils with opportunities to explore, challenge themselves, and grow in confidence.

Area of installation

Brief

The school contacted The Playground Company to transform an unused tarmac space into a vibrant new playground that would promote active play and physical development for their KS2 pupils. They met with our Senior Playground Consultant, Anna, to discuss their ideas about adding climbing equipment and physical pay apparatus that would inspire the children to be active and build their confidence while developing their motor skills.

Solution

Our design team worked hard to come up with three different options for the school that all worked with their space and their budget; these options had a range of equipment incorporated into their design including Clamber Stacks and various Trim Trail Components. This showcased what could be achieved with the space – in the end, the school opted for a Trim Trail.

Project Details

The final design was a Trim Trail designed to help the children develop their strength, agility, balance and coordination. The trail consisted of:

Log Traverse – Encourages balance and coordination as children move from log to log, developing focus and lower body strength.

Web Traverse – A rope-based challenge that strengthens grip and upper body muscles while promoting problem-solving and spatial awareness.

Climbing Traverse – Builds agility and flexibility as pupils navigate across using both hands and feet, improving core stability.

Jungle Traverse – A combination of stepping, hanging, and balancing elements that provide a full-body workout, boosting confidence and resilience.

All products were constructed using sustainably sourced, treated play-grade timber, ensuring durability and environmental responsibility. Every item installed conforms to BS EN 1176 safety standards, guaranteeing the highest levels of compliance and quality.

Result

The school posted on their social media platforms to express their delight with their new trim trail:

“The KS2 trim trail is open for business! There were lots of smiling faces this afternoon as the trim trail was used for the first time.”

It has been a pleasure working with Our Lady & St Werburgh’s and it is always so rewarding when we see the children’s faces when they see their new playground!
