Introduction

Warstones Primary School is a 2 form-entry school in Wolverhampton providing a nurturing and inclusive educational environment for their pupils. The school prides themselves on their core values of respectfulness, responsibility, kindness, resilience and aspiration within their community, and work tirelessly to deliver these values within their teaching and learning curriculum.

Area of installation

Brief

The school contacted us as they had a muddy, sloped space in their KS1 playground that they wanted to create a colourful sensory garden, similar to a recent project that they had seen of ours at St Giles School in Retford. We worked with the school to create a design that emulated the same features of the project they liked, while working with their sloped space. It was important that this space provided multi-sensory output, through brightly coloured surfacing, tactile panels and musical instruments, as well as having places where children could sit and socialise or take a moment to be calm.

Project Details

The most striking feature of this design is the colourful Artificial Grass Surfacing – this is a great surface option for playgrounds and outdoor learning zones as it is soft, durable, and available in a range of colours. This gave us a lot of opportunity to be extra creative with what we could incorporate into their surface, including a Rainbow Sensory Path, musical Graphics, colourful circles and jigsaw pieces.

To provide opportunities for sensory play, we installed musical instruments, like Rainbow Chimes, Rainbow Metallophone and Bongo Drums, tactile Play Panels, and Creative Stations. This combination of different sensory play equipment ensures that the children are provided with a stimulating environment, perfect for holistic development.

To ensure there was adequate seating in the space, we chose to add Mushroom Seats as add more colour and a touch of fun to the area. We also included a Timber Teepee for the children (and teachers) to sit inside.

Result

Warstones Primary School are over the moon with their new sensory garden in their KS1 playground! It has been a pleasure working with the school and we hope it provides lots of fun for years to come!
