Introduction
The Playground Company recently completed an extention to an exciting EYFS reception playground transformation we previously installed at Greensted Primary School & Nursery in Basildon, Essex.
Read about the original project here.
This second phase of the project involved the installation of a new timber climbing frame alongside colourful, all-weather playground surfacing, creating an inviting outdoor play space that encourages physical development, confidence and exploration. Designed with young learners in mind, the new reception playground provides opportunities for children to develop essential movement skills through active, imaginative and adventurous outdoor play.

The Brief
Greensted Primary School & Nursery wanted to enhance its existing reception playground with new climbing equipment and durable, low-maintenance playground surfacing. The school required an engaging outdoor play feature that would encourage children to challenge themselves physically while supporting the development of balance, coordination and upper-body strength.
The existing area featured natural grass and a decked base, which needed to be removed to accommodate the new equipment and surfacing. A key consideration was creating a practical, all-weather play area that would remain attractive and accessible throughout the school year, reducing the challenges associated with maintaining natural grass in a busy school playground.
The Solution
The Playground Company designed and installed a new climbing frame, complemented by approximately 65m² of luxury artificial grass playground surfacing.
Clamber Stack Isola Climbing Frame
At the centre of the transformation is our Clamber Stack Isola, an exciting timber climbing structure designed to encourage active play and physical development. Featuring a combination of timber beams, balancing elements and ropes, the climbing frame offers children opportunities to climb, balance, stretch and navigate different routes.
The open-ended design encourages children to explore the equipment in their own way, helping to develop:
Balance and coordination ā navigating timber beams and different climbing routes.
Upper-body strength ā gripping, pulling and supporting body weight during climbing activities.
Gross motor skills ā developing control over larger body movements.
Problem-solving skills ā planning routes and overcoming physical challenges.
Confidence and independence ā encouraging children to assess challenges and develop their abilities.
Social development ā promoting communication, cooperation and turn-taking through shared play experiences.
The Clamber Stack Isola provides an exciting addition to the school's EYFS outdoor learning environment, supporting physical development through purposeful play.
Luxury Artificial Grass Playground Surfacing
To complement the new climbing frame, our installation team transformed the surrounding area with approximately 65m² of Artificial Grass surfacing.
The design incorporates two contrasting colours:
50m² of green Luxury Artificial Grass, providing a natural-looking finish that blends with the surrounding playground.
15m² of vibrant blue Multi-Play Artificial Grass, creating a distinctive feature area around the new climbing equipment.
The contrasting colours help visually define the climbing zone while introducing an attractive splash of colour to the reception playground.
Unlike natural grass, artificial grass provides a durable, low-maintenance surface that can withstand regular playground use without becoming muddy or worn.
This makes it an excellent solution for busy EYFS playgrounds, helping schools maximise opportunities for outdoor learning and play throughout the year.
The Result
The completed project has extended the vibrant and exciting reception playground, adding another play space for the pupils. The result is a colourful and engaging EYFS playground that supports physical development, encourages adventurous play and provides new opportunities for learning beyond the classroom.
