Brief

Bishop's Tachbrook Pre-School Nursery is an early years setting, providing high quality education to 2, 3 and 4 year olds. They contacted us with ideas about improving their outdoor provisions - they wanted to create an outdoor learning space that extending the learning in the early years foundation stage from inside. Before their install, the area had uneven surfacing and equipment that wasn't fit for purpose.

Area of installation

Solution

The nursery were open to ideas, but wanted to keep some of their existing features, such as their decked area and mud kitchen. Our solution was to create a new, artificial grass playground, where the surface itself created zones within the playground, while also utilizing the decked area to create a performance stage, and make the mud kitchen into its own nature-investigation zone.

Project Details

Artificial Grass Surfacing

The area was levelled out to reduce the problems with uneven surface that was previously laid, then luxury artificial grass was installed to make the area usable all year round. Multi-Play Grass was used to create a trackway for bikes and scooters - this product has a short pile height making it perfect for sports and tracks.

Construction Zone

Black and yellow artificial grass was also used in the construction zone, to create an area where children can take part in loose parts play or construction activities. The Construction Wall in this area also provides a canvas for the children to draw on or build against.

Performance Stage

We added a Playground Stage Backdrop to their decked area to create the perfect performance stage! The stage is completed with the addition of a Shade Net Pergola, to provide shade as well as add some fun and colour to the area.

Nature Area

A bark pit was created using sleeper edging for their mud kitchen to be used to its full potential by little chefs! We also added a Discovery Yard where they can explore different materials using buckets and spades.

Physical Play

The nursery also wanted a climbing frame with a slide, so we added an Early Years Tower to the area, to provide a physical play feature where the children could burn off their energy as well as building their muscle strength and develop their motor skills. Our Early Years Towers are modular, making them completely customizable. Because of this, we were able to incorporate more of the seven areas of learning into their tower, by adding a chalkboard to one side, along with the slide.

Result

We went to visit the nursery after their project was completed - this was an amazing expericne, seeing the children's faces when they saw their finished area for the first time. All of the staff and children were over the moon with the area and we are so happy to be part of the project that will benefit EYFS children for years to come.
