Introduction

Kings Oak Primary School provide themselves on providing the highest quality learning and educational experiences to their pupils, by giving them engaging and relevant curriculum that helps them to achieve their full potential. As part of this, they wanted to extend their outdoor provisions for their reception pupils.

Area of installation

Brief

The school contacted us as they wanted their outdoor area to reflect their high-quality teaching and learning; this involved developing their outdoor early years provisions for their reception pupils. The area was previously a plain artificial grass space with an unused soil area - they wanted this to be transformed into a space that the children could be active and burn off their energy, while also encouraging them to take part in imaginative role play.

Project Details

After interpreting the brief, our team came up with a design that combines physical and imaginative play by incorporating beach themed colourful artificial grass around the main play structure. The installation included:

Jolly Roger Play Boat – our smallest playground boat, as we wanted a piece of active play equipment that would make the most of the limited space. This boat has large dome windows, a climbing wall and a slide, encouraging children to build their strength through climbing then provides a vestibular output when they go down the slide.

Mobile Trail Items – As the space is limited, we included a range of our most popular mobile trail items, as they do not require installation and can be moved around the area, making it more adaptable and ready for open-ended play. The pieces include a Mobile Log Net Climber, Mobile Step Challenge and Mobile Zig Zag Stepper. These pieces of moveable outdoor play apparatus encourage children to develop their agility, balance and coordination and provide proprioceptive output, without being limited by permanent installation.

Themed Artificial Grass – we installed our Artificial Grass in green, yellow and blue to create a beach theme, along with shark fins and water Graphics. Artificial Grass is a great option for playgrounds and play spaces as it is soft, durable and low maintenance.

Result

The school has shown off their new area in their newsletters, demonstrated the massive difference that having an exciting outdoor play area benefits their reception pupils.
