Introduction
Grange Primary School is a school based in Ealing, London. With over 600 pupils on roll, from EYFS to KS1 and KS2, the school emphasises the importance of empowering children and providing them with a diverse and varied curriculum. The school’s ethos is based around creativity, independence and collaboration so they wanted to extend their values into their outside space, by providing the children with somewhere that exercised these skills.

Brief
The Deputy Head Teacher of the school got in contact with The Playground Company as the school wanted an outdoor classroom that could facilitate a class of up to 35 pupils. They also mentioned that the school was interested in a colourful shelter that they had seen at some of our other projects, and a sensory garden. We worked with the school to come up with designs for the three different areas – Outdoor Classroom, Shelter and Sensory Garden.
Project Details
For the Outdoor Classroom, the school liked the look and functionality of our Playground Gazebo – this is always a great option when it comes to outdoor teaching and learning spaces as they are completely customisable with additions like deck with access ramp, bench seating, walls and teaching stations. The school opted to have half walls at the front, full walls at the back and a whiteboard, making it the perfect weather-proof teaching space. As the gazebo was being installed into their existing artificial grass surface, we added lime green Funky Grass in and around the structure to ensure a seamless transition between the new surface and the old one.
For the Shelter, we understood that the school liked the rainbow colour of our Playground Pergolas, however they also mentioned that they wanted the shelter to be waterproof so the area could be used during rainy weather. We combined the colourful aesthetic with practicality by installing a Timber Canopy with Skylights, adding an exciting and visually stimulating element to the space!
In the Sensory Garden, we interpreted their brief and understood that they wanted the natural and calming feel to the space, so our design used neutral tones and natural elements to create this space. We used our Luxury Artificial Grass to make the space usable year round, as it was previously grass that would get boggy and unusable in the winter. We also used Multi-Play Artificial Grass to create a beige pathway into the area, with sensory play items including Sunlit Totems and a Den Building Frame over the path. To ensure the space felt connected to nature, we added planters to the perimeter of the space and a Tree Seat around the existing tree where the children can sit, socialise and relax in their new sensory garden. We then enclosed the space with Timber Bow Top Fencing to create a separation between the sensory garden and the rest of the playground.
Result
The school now has outdoor learning spaces that reflect their high-quality teaching and are weather-ready for outdoor learning in the autumn term!
