Introduction

Waterside school is based in Southeast London, catering to children aged 5-11 with special educational needs and provides education for pupils with social, emotional and mental health difficulties (SEMH) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Area of installation

Brief

Waterside School is a returning customer who, for their first project, had a Clamber Stack Figlio installed with themed Artificial Grass. For this project, they wanted to resurface their outdoor gym area and redevelop their Nurture Area. For the Nurture Area, they asked for a play structure, a shade net pergola and a goal target. They also wanted to incorporate there existing tyres in the area to be an addition to the play structure.

Solution

We came up with a few options based on the initial brief and, after feedback from the school, we created an area with different zones. From a quiet shaded area to a physical play area incorporating the existing tyres as part of a trim trail.

Project Details

Physical Play

We installed a Clamber Stack Midi with Deck to encourage the children to be imaginative and make it into whatever they want it to be, from a shipwreck to a castle. This play item gives the children the chance to be creative and develop social skills while playing alongside other children. Along with the Clamber Stack, we created a low-level Trim Trailto develop the children’s agility, balance and coordination. At the opposite end of the area, we installed a HDPE goal frame against the wall and added a penalty box into the Artificial Grass. While the space in this area is limited, we still wanted to give the children a space for sports.

Shelter

To give the children somewhere they could sit out of the sun, we installed a Rainbow Shade Net Pergola, along with a Chalkboard and four Mobile Benches. This has created a quiet space for children to sit at break time, or it can be used as a teaching area for lessons can take place in the open air.

Artificial Grass

To brighten up the area, we installed new Artificial Grass to the full area. We used different colours to section the areas in to climbing, sports and quiet zones. Under the clamber stack and trim trail we used Biege and Blue Artificial Sports Grass to create a sea and island theme.

Result

The school is so happy to have a bright new space for the children to play and relax at breaktimes, making use of a smaller space in their school.
