Making The Most of a Sloped Playground

📍Selwyn Primary School, East London
🗓 September 2024

Introduction
Selwyn Primary School, part of Arbor Academy Trust and situated in East London, has over 700 pupils ranging from 2 to 11 years old. They strive to provide a high-quality education to equip children with the necessary skills, knowledge and understanding on their progression into young adulthood. As part of this mission, they got in touch with us looking to add some adventurous challenge to their playground.
Area of installation

Brief
On meeting with our sales team, the school discussed the need to create a space for children to challenge themselves physically whilst also building an environment where they can develop social skills and enjoy imaginative play. The proposed area of installation was an unused, overgrown grass embankment which, in its current state, was inaccessible to the children.
Solution
To expand the school’s available play area, we designed a fully bespoke Play Fort which would be built to seamlessly blend with the sloped area, opening the space up to wealth of new play opportunities. We also opted to install an Artificial Grass surface at the base of this structure to firstly create a seamless transition between the existing tarmac play area and the new Play Fort and secondly to ensure adequate shock-absorbent safety surfacing could be installed to protect children from any falls from the equipment.
Project Details
To ensure every child could be appropriately challenged we designed two distinct play features: a set of steps for younger children and an inclined climbing wall for older children. The steps serve as an easily accessible route until the children feel ready to challenge themselves with the climbing wall. Then in the centre of the structure, we installed a bright blue slide to match the school’s colour, giving a bespoke touch to the play area.
Adjacent to the new Play Fort, we installed a Hillside Scramble Net to create an additional, more challenging route to the top of this hill, promoting coordination skills and agility. This was again manufactured in blue to match the school’s colour.
Result
The finished play area created a whole new space for children to play and develop, making better use of the school’s available space without the need for excessive landscaping. Their students now have a brand-new space to physically challenge themselves, develop socially and immerse themselves in exciting and imaginative role play activities. We’re proud to have had the privilege of designing and installing this space for Selwyn Primary School and we hope it brings many years of exciting play for all their students.
