Introduction

Dorothy Barley Infant School is a primary school in Dagenham that we have worked with on previous occasions, so we were delighted when they got back in contact with us with the news that they wanted to transform another one of their outdoor spaces.

Area of installation

Brief

The school’s reception playground had become tired and uninviting, with natural grass that often turned muddy and unusable during the winter months. They wanted to transform the space into a playground that could be used all year round, that would also the facilitate imaginative play, physical activity and sensory development and support the EYFS curriculum.

Solution

Our design team worked with the school to create a reception playground design that was practical and stimulating. To ensure the ground didn’t become muddy, we installed artificial grass to all of the area and created designated zones for the different play elements that would be added.

Project Details

Luxury Artificial Grass was installed to most of the area, with Funky Grass used to create the river theme and construction zone. Graphics were also added around the stage and the musical instruments to add more colour and another element of fun. We also included a Roadway using Multi-Play Artificial Grass – a product that is perfect for bikes and scooters due to its short pile height.

A Clamber Stack Passo was added to the centre of the roadway to provide the children with a climbing frame that would challenge them to an appropriate level, while helping them to develop their upper body strength, coordination, and gross motor skills.

The performance stage benefits from a Playground Stage Backdrop that provides the opportunity for open ended play while developing confidence and communication skills. We also added Grass Top Seats to give them somewhere to sit when watching their performances. We utilized their existing musical instruments by relocating them to this area as we understand the importance of encouraging music in the playground, for the development of confidence and motor skills.

We also created a Construction Zone to encourage imaginative role play will a Work Bench and Playground Skip for loose parts play and building activities, and a Sand Quarry for sand play, providing a tactile sensory experience and develop mathematical skills through practising weight, volume and capacity in play.

All our products are built to conform to BS EN 1176 and are manufactured using hard-wearing, high-quality materials to ensure a long service life.

Result

The new playground provides a rich, holistic learning opportunity for each child – the school are really pleased with the result and we are proud to have worked with them on this project!
