Brief
Grafton Primary School wanted to transform its existing early years outdoor play area into a more engaging and exciting space for pupils. The school was looking for a new climbing frame and high-quality artificial grass surfacing that would make better use of the existing outdoor area while providing children with opportunities for active, adventurous and imaginative play. The existing playground included tarmac and dig pit areas, which required preparation before the new playground equipment and safety surfacing could be installed.

Solution
Working closely with Grafton Primary School, The Playground Company created a colourful and engaging playground design centred around a new Explorer Extended Single Deck climbing frame and vibrant artificial grass surfacing. The existing area was prepared ready for the new installation, including the removal and disposal of the existing sleepers and pits.
To create a bright and inviting outdoor environment, approximately 102m² of Luxury Artificial Grass Surfacing was installed across the existing tarmac and dig pit areas. The design incorporated both green and turquoise artificial grass to create a fun river-themed feature within the playground.
At the centre of the new play area, we installed an Explorer Extended Single Deck Unit 5 climbing frame, providing a variety of physical play opportunities for pupils.
Project Details
Explorer Extended Single Deck Climbing Frame
The new climbing frame was selected to provide a range of activities within one compact play unit, encouraging children to develop their physical skills while having fun outdoors.
The Explorer Extended Single Deck Unit 5 includes:
Stainless steel slide
Climbing challenge
Rope walk
Balance beam
Timber roof
The combination of climbing, balancing and sliding activities provides opportunities for children to build confidence, coordination and physical strength through active outdoor play.
Colourful Artificial Grass Surfacing
Approximately 102m² of Luxury Artificial Grass Surfacing was installed as part of the playground transformation.
The surfacing consisted of:
82m² of green luxury artificial grass
20m² of turquoise artificial grass
A colourful river-themed design
35mm shockpad beneath the relevant play area
The shockpad was installed to provide impact attenuation beneath the climbing frame and accommodate the required critical fall height of the play equipment.
The artificial grass creates a colourful, practical and hardwearing playground surface that is suitable for regular school use, while the river-themed section adds an imaginative element to the overall playground design.
The artificial grass surfacing was also supplied with a 10-year product guarantee.
Result
The completed project has transformed Grafton Primary School's existing outdoor play area into a bright, colourful and exciting space for early years pupils.
The new climbing frame provides multiple opportunities for active play, from climbing and balancing to sliding and traversing, while the colourful artificial grass creates a welcoming and visually engaging environment. The turquoise river-themed surfacing adds an imaginative feature to the playground, helping to create a space where children can explore, play and develop their physical skills.
By combining high-quality playground equipment with safety-focused artificial grass surfacing, The Playground Company has helped Grafton Primary School create an outdoor play area that is designed for active play, imaginative exploration and everyday school use.
