Introduction

Emmanuel Church of England Primary School is located in the heart of West Hampstead, London, catering to children aged between 3 and 11 years. Since their foundation in 1845, they have aspired to help every child grow and fulfil their own unique potential throughout every year of their education. As part of their determined vision to provide every child with a happy, safe, and stimulating environment, they reached out to us to discuss developing their outdoor provisions for their Early Years Foundation Stage.

Area of installation

Brief

After meeting with one of our sales representatives, Martin, they discussed the need to expand the play area at their nursery with plans to remove existing equipment and an outdoor classroom unit to make way for a brand new open-plan playground, which would target the specific developmental needs of their EYFS children. They also highlighted the need for an injection of colour into the area to creating an exciting and stimulating environment, aiming to promote growth both physically and socially.

Solution

Upon receiving the brief, our design team got to work creating an area that would meet every requirement specified by the school. First deciding on a bright artificial grass design for the surfacing with different colours to designate different zones of play. This surface would extend throughout the whole play area to create one exciting, cohesive environment. We then planned to offer a range of products that would suit both the age range of the children and the limited space available.

Project Details

Physical Play:

The centrepiece of the area is a Clamber Stack Piccolo; a low-level climbing unit with a small footprint designed to help develop balance, agility, and coordination in young children, making it a perfect choice for the nursery. This unit also gave the school a chance to add a bespoke touch to their play area by

choosing to have the ropes manufactured in their school colour.

Stage Area:

Replacing their old, bulky construction play area, we installed a brand-new Playground Stage with colourful Artificial Grass Top Seats and Star Graphics inlayed in the artificial grass surfacing. This creates the perfect space for children to express themselves both creatively and socially. The large chalkboard backdrop allows children to create an exciting imaginary space in a collaborative manner, serving as a great source for social and emotional development in an Early Years setting. Additionally, this again gave the school a chance to personalise their playground as they opted for the stage to be manufactured in their school colours and emblazoned with the words “Emmanuel Theatre”.

Water Play Area:

To help with the development of mathematics and problem-solving skills we installed a Water Wall with turquoise artificial grass to create a clear zone for water play in the area. The magnetic chutes and water pump on the Water Wall challenge the children by tasking them with creating a route down the wall to channel the water into the trough below, teaching them to coordinate and work together whilst also offering an exciting and ever-changing play experience.

Planting Area:

Finally, the installation of a small Planter Bed and Mini Beast Manor in conjunction with an area of brown artificial grass created a quiet nook in the play area for children to learn about nature and the world around them.

Result

This nursery now has an exciting outdoor area where the children can develop in the seven areas of learning in a safe and engaging way. We have a wide range of experience creating EYFS playgrounds and love to see such and amazing transformation!
