Introduction

Brampton Village Primary School wanted to enhance its Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) outdoor provision by creating an exciting new playground where younger pupils could explore, develop their physical skills and enjoy imaginative play.

Working with The Playground Company, the school developed a bespoke EYFS playground design that combines colourful artificial grass surfacing, climbing equipment, den-building opportunities and movable play resources. The result is a versatile outdoor environment designed to encourage active play, creativity and exploration.

Brief

The school wanted to create a fantastic new outdoor play area tailored to the needs of its early years pupils. The design needed to make better use of the existing outdoor space while providing a variety of activities to encourage physical development, social interaction and imaginative play.

A key part of the brief was to introduce durable artificial grass surfacing, including a dedicated roadway over the existing concrete path. Alongside the new surfacing, the school wanted a selection of playground equipment that would allow children to climb, build dens, experiment with different layouts and challenge themselves through physical activity.

Solution

Working closely with Brampton Village Primary School, The Playground Company developed a bespoke EYFS playground design incorporating approximately 168.5m² of artificial grass surfacing and a carefully selected range of play equipment.

The new surfacing combines luxury green artificial grass with beige Multi-Play artificial grass and a contrasting black-and-white roadway. This creates a visually engaging playground that offers different opportunities for exploration and role play.

To complement the surfacing, we included a Clamber Stack Isola climbing unit, two Den Building Frames, Sunlit Totems, artificial grass top seats, movable Grass Blocks and mobile trim trail equipment. Together, these features provide a varied play environment where children can move between climbing challenges, construction activities, den building and open-ended play.

Project Details

Luxury Artificial Grass Surfacing and Roadway

Approximately 168.5m² of artificial grass surfacing was specified to transform the existing outdoor area into a more inviting and practical EYFS playground.

The surfacing design includes:

The installation includes a prepared base of compacted MOT Type 1 and granno, with treated timber edging around the perimeter.

The 45-linear-metre roadway runs over the existing concrete path, creating a dedicated route for imaginative road-based play. The contrasting artificial grass colours help distinguish the roadway from the surrounding play area, adding variety to the overall playground design.

The artificial grass product is supplied with a 10-year product guarantee.

Clamber Stack Isola

The Clamber Stack Isola introduces an exciting climbing feature to the new EYFS playground. Climbing equipment provides opportunities for children to challenge themselves physically while practising coordination, balance and agility.

As part of the wider playground design, the climbing unit helps create a varied environment where children can develop confidence through active play and explore different ways of moving.

Den Building Frames

Two Den Building Frames were included to encourage creative and imaginative outdoor play. Den building gives children opportunities to work together, experiment with ideas and create their own play spaces. The frames provide a starting point for open-ended activities, allowing pupils to invent games, develop stories and use their imagination during outdoor play.

Sunlit Totems

The playground design includes two Sunlit Totems: one measuring 1.2m high and one measuring 1.6m high.

These features introduce additional visual interest to the outdoor environment and complement the natural green and beige tones of the artificial grass surfacing.

Artificial Grass Top Seats

Five movable Artificial Grass Top Seats were included to provide flexible seating throughout the playground. Their movable design allows staff and pupils to adapt the layout to suit different activities, whether creating a space for group interaction, taking a break from active play or supporting imaginative games.

Grass Blocks

A set of 12 movable Grass Blocks provides further opportunities for flexible, child-led play.

These versatile play resources can be rearranged to create different layouts and challenges, encouraging children to experiment, collaborate and explore their own ideas. They also complement the playground's physical play equipment by offering additional ways to incorporate movement into everyday outdoor activities.

Mobile Trim Trail Equipment

To extend the physical play opportunities available, the project includes three mobile trim trail items:

These movable playground resources introduce a variety of stepping, climbing and balancing challenges. They can be used to encourage children to develop coordination, balance and physical confidence while giving staff flexibility to adapt activities to suit the children using the space.

Result

The new EYFS playground design brings together physical activity, imaginative play and flexible outdoor resources to create a varied environment for Brampton Village Primary School's younger pupils.

The combination of luxury artificial grass surfacing, a dedicated roadway, climbing equipment, den-building frames and mobile trim trail items offers a range of opportunities for children to explore and engage in active play. Meanwhile, the movable Grass Blocks and artificial grass top seats allow the space to be adapted for different activities and group sizes.

By combining colourful surfacing with versatile playground equipment, The Playground Company has developed a bespoke outdoor play design that supports physical development, creativity and social interaction while making better use of the school's existing outdoor area.
