Introduction

Pippa’s House Nursery is part of a reputable nursery group based in Hampshire and Surrey, providing high-quality early years education and childcare for children aged 3 months to 5 years. Their ethos centres around nurturing each child’s curiosity, creativity, and confidence in a safe, stimulating environment. Outdoor learning plays a key role in their approach to early childhood development.

Area of installation

Brief

After working with us on multiple occasions, the nursery group knew what they wanted from their area – they wanted to emulate what had been achieved at their other early years settings while adding a unique twist for this nursery.

Solution

Working closely with the Pippa’s House Nursery, we created a tailored outdoor playground design that encouraged exploration, role play, and physical development. The space required clever zoning to accommodate a variety of play opportunities while maintaining clear sightlines for supervision. We incorporated bold colours, durable materials, and multi-functional features to ensure long-term value and daily engagement.

Project Details

Themed Artificial Grass

Luxury Artificial Grass was installed to the majority of the area, making it useable all year round, with Funky Grass being used in various colours to make different zones for different learning targets, for example, beige in the sand play area and blue in the water play area. We also added number graphics to help the children with number recognition and counting.

Roadway

Multi-Play Artificial Grass was used for the Roadway due to its short pile height, making it perfect for bikes and scooters. Incorporating a roadway into the playground gives the children somewhere to develop their scooting skills while also teaching them about road safety, and appealing to the Understanding the World element of the Development Matters.

Messy Play

We added a Sliding Sandpit which provides a tactile sensory experience and supports creativity, social interaction and mathematical skills through learning about weight, volume and capacity. Adding Freestanding Water Chutes also encourages the development of mathematical skills, through the same principles; promoting STEM learning and problem-solving encourages holistic development in the Early Years Foundation Stage. The nursery also wanted to use their existing mud kitchen, so we made sure there was a designated area to house this.

Play Panels

We also added 4-In-A-Row and Tic Tac Toe game panels – these are large panels that can accommodate multiple children playing the games, therefore encouraging social interaction, resilience and communication.

All our products are built to conform to BS EN 1176 and are manufactured using hard-wearing, high-quality materials to ensure a long service life.

Result

The completed EYFS playground has transformed the nursery’s outdoor space into a vibrant learning environment that supports child-led exploration and imaginative play. Children now enjoy varied play experiences that align with the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum. We are proud to have such a positive working relationship with Pippa’s House Nursery and look forward to working with them again in the future.
