Introduction

We have worked with Middleton Primary School to develop their inner-courtyard space, to create a versitile and adaptable space for their pupils. We worked with the school, their budget and their requirements for the area to provide them with a design that would tick all their boxes and give them playground equipment that would suit the needs of all the children, from creative play to climbing equipment.

Phase 1

Middleton Primary School, Milton Keynes, originally contacted us as they wanted to improve their outdoor provisions in their courtyard space. This area would be used by KS1 and KS2 children so they wanted versatile equipment that would suit a varied age group. As they had recently had some new artificial grass surfacing installed, they did not want any equipment that would have to be installed and therefore damage their new surface.

After meeting with Martin, they discussed how the children used the space and what designated areas of play they wished to achieve with their new equipment. This would have to satisfy many requirements in terms of areas of development, including drawing and writing facilities as well as a physical play area.

We created distinct zones with the following items:

Waterplay – Freestanding Water Wall with Water Chutes and Tub

Creative Play – Mobile Paint Station and Chalkboard

Physical Play – Buildable Blocks, Grass Blocks and Movable Trail Items

Phase 2

After receiving their new play items, the school contacted us a second time to discuss the installation of a shelter over their entrance. At first, they wanted a Rainbow Shade Net Pergola as they loved the bright colours in the roof, however, they also wanted a structure that would provide shelter from the rain during the wetter months. Working to their brief, budget and space, we designed a Rainbow Playground Canopy, that combines the exciting colourful roof of a pergola while still using durable, water-proof polycarbonate roof panels. This way, the school would get the best of both.

Result

Middleton Primary School now has an exciting, versatile outside space that their pupils can enjoy all year round. This will provide varied learning opportunities, from physical development to social skills, as well as a weatherproof sheltered space for staff and children.
