Canopy & Artificial Grass Surfacing at Great Walstead

Brief

The school wanted to make better use of their existing outdoor space while providing pupils with an area that could be enjoyed in a range of weather conditions. A key requirement was to replace the existing canopy with a larger, high-quality structure that would provide reliable shelter from the British weather. The school also wanted to introduce colour into the central area, creating a more engaging and visually stimulating environment through the use of colourful artificial grass. With the existing surface providing a suitable base, the new artificial grass could be installed directly over the prepared area, helping to give the space a fresh and cohesive appearance.

Solution

Working closely with Great Walstead School, our team developed a bespoke solution tailored to the dimensions and requirements of the existing space.

The centrepiece of the project was a large bespoke Timber Canopy, designed and built specifically for the school. The wall-mounted structure measures approximately 39m in length, with a projection of up to 4m reducing to 1.8m to suit the shape of the area. The canopy features strong 25mm multi-wall polycarbonate roofing panels, supported by aluminium glazing bars. This provides a durable, waterproof and UV-safe covered area, allowing pupils to continue using the outdoor space whatever the weather. A complete guttering system was also incorporated to effectively manage rainwater.

The existing canopy was fully removed and disposed of as part of the installation, giving the school a completely refreshed sheltered area.

Project Details

Bespoke Timber Canopy

The new canopy was custom-built by our skilled joiners to fit the school building and existing outdoor area precisely. Its substantial length provides a generous covered space for pupils, making the area more versatile and usable throughout the year. The polycarbonate roofing provides protection from both rain and UV exposure, while the aluminium glazing bars offer a durable and high-quality finish. Where canopy posts were positioned, the surrounding ground was patch-repaired with black tarmac to create a neat and consistent finish.

Colourful Artificial Grass Surfacing

To complement the new canopy and bring colour into the outdoor area, we installed approximately 77m² of themed artificial grass surfacing. Rather than opting for a single-colour surface, the school selected a combination of green Luxury Artificial Grass, along with turquoise and pink Funky Artificial Grass. 

The combination creates a bright and playful finish, helping to define the space while adding visual interest to the outdoor environment. The artificial grass was installed directly over the existing surface following preparation of the area, creating a durable and attractive finish that can be enjoyed throughout the school year.

Result

The completed project has transformed the outdoor area at Great Walstead School, combining a substantial new sheltered space with colourful, durable artificial grass surfacing.

The bespoke timber canopy provides pupils with a comfortable covered area that can be used throughout the year, while the colourful artificial grass gives the surrounding space a fresh and vibrant appearance.
