Introduction

Hewens Primary School, based in Middlesex, are part of The Rosedale Hewens Academy Trust and pride themselves on their achievements driving up academic success in the local area and helping children grow across their entire curriculum. They encourage their students to become confident, caring individuals by creating environments that promote personal, social and emotional development in all areas of their school.

Area of installation

Brief

Hewens Primary School reached out to us to discuss redeveloping their outdoor spaces with two main aims: to brighten up their existing play areas and to replace worn-out rotten equipment. They had two areas that needed attention; the first of which was their existing Early Years playground where they wanted to inject some colour by installing a brand-new surface throughout, creating a more exciting environment for their students to develop in. The second area was their existing playboat which had grown tired over the years and was in need of a replacement along with new safety surfacing.

Project Details

Starting with the Early Years area, we selected Artificial Grass to install due to it’s ease of installation over existing tarmac areas and the wide range of colours it is available in. Our design team put together a design that worked around both their existing equipment and their existing Wetpour safety surfacing, using different colours to designate individual zones of play. Using green Artificial Grass for the majority of the area we blended their existing surfacing into the design by installing patches of yellow Artificial Grass to create an imaginative sea theme. We also installed some additional areas of yellow and blue Artificial Grass around their sand and water play equipment, lime green around their story telling equipment, red to surround their stage, and beige pathway throughout the area to link the gate into the play area to their existing shade sail.

For the second area, to replace their existing play boat, we installed a bespoke Adventure Ark designed with a taller Slide, Scramble Net and Climbing Wall specifically to suit the school’s requirements. In addition to these play features the Adventure Ark also includes a Fireman’s Pole, a Climbing Ramp, a Tunnel, and Pirate-Themed Play Panels. This combination of play features creates an inclusive product that encompasses children of all ages and abilities whilst also creating an exciting imaginative play space.

Surrounding, the Adventure Ark we overlayed their existing safety surfacing with bright, new Artificial Grass, using different colours and graphics to build an immersive sea-themed environment that links to their Early Years play area.

Result

Hewens Primary School now have two exciting new regenerated play spaces to help their children grow and develop, linking back to their aim to build environments that promote personal, social and emotional development alongside physical growth and learning.
