Introduction

St Stephen's C of E Primary School, located in London, wanted to improve its existing outdoor sports facilities and create high-quality, versatile spaces that could be used by pupils throughout the year.

The school approached The Playground Company to transform its existing tarmac playground with durable artificial sports grass surfacing, creating two distinct sports areas suitable for a range of activities. The project also included improvements to the existing sports fencing, helping to create a more complete and hard-wearing outdoor sports environment.

Brief

The school wanted to make better use of its existing outdoor space by introducing new, colourful and durable sports surfacing. The brief was to create two artificial sports pitches, with clearly defined areas for different sporting activities, while making use of the school's existing tarmac base and sports fencing.

As part of the wider improvements, the school also required protective timber kickboards to be installed along its existing sports fencing.

Solution

Working with the school, we developed a surfacing solution using Multi-Play Artificial Sports Grass in two contrasting colours. The new sports grass provides a durable, low-maintenance and versatile surface suitable for a variety of school sports and activities.

The first area, located within the school's existing sports cage, was transformed with approximately 186m² of Artificial Sports Grass. This included green Multi-Play Sports Grass with white lines for the actual pitch, and blue artificial grass for the goal boxes.

The second area, positioned outside the existing cage, received approximately 244m² of Artificial Sports Grass, predominantly using blue Multi-Play Sports Grass. White football pitch markings, yellow netball markings and red basketball markings were incorporated into the design, creating a versatile multi-use sports area.

The project also included approximately 150m² of Luxury Artificial Grass surrounding the new sports areas, helping to create a visually cohesive finish across the wider playground.

Project Details

Two Artificial Sports Pitches

The new sports areas were designed to provide St Stephen's C of E Primary School with flexible spaces that can accommodate a range of sporting activities. The first court features approximately 172m² of green Multi-Play Sports Grass, together with blue goal-end areas and white sports markings.

The second court features approximately 231m² of blue Multi-Play Sports Grass, incorporating white football pitch markings, yellow netball markings and red basketball markings. The sports line markings can be tailored to suit the layout and requirements of the school, allowing the space to be used for multiple sports.

Artificial Sports Grass Surfacing

Multi-Play Artificial Sports Grass was selected because of its suitability for busy school sports areas. The short pile surface is designed to provide a practical and durable finish for activities including football, basketball and other playground sports.

The new surfacing was installed directly over the school's existing tarmac playground surface, providing an efficient way to revitalise the outdoor sports facilities without requiring a completely new base.

All of the sports surfacing products included a 10-year product guarantee.

Treated Timber Kickboards

To complement the new sports pitches, we also supplied and installed approximately 70 linear metres of treated timber kickboards to the school's existing sports fencing. The timber kickboards provide a robust lower-level barrier around the sports area, helping to protect the existing fencing and creating a neat, finished appearance around the pitches.

Luxury Artificial Grass

Approximately 150m² of Luxury Artificial Grass was installed around the new sports areas. This helped to connect the different sections of the playground while introducing a softer, more attractive alternative to the existing hardstanding.

Result

The completed project has transformed St Stephen's C of E Primary School's existing outdoor space into a vibrant and versatile sports environment. With two new artificial sports pitches, dedicated football and basketball markings, surrounding Luxury Artificial Grass and approximately 70 linear metres of treated timber kickboards, the school now has a practical outdoor facility designed to support active play and a wide range of sporting activities.

The project demonstrates how existing school playgrounds and tarmac areas can be revitalised through carefully designed artificial sports grass surfacing, creating long-lasting outdoor sports facilities without the need to completely rebuild the existing space.
