At The Playground Company, we believe that every child deserves access to outdoor spaces that not only encourage play but also support their development in meaningful ways. Our recent installation at Together Trust in Manchester, is a prime example of how thoughtful design can create an environment that is both inclusive and enriching.

Inclusive Play for All
This vibrant outdoor area was designed with inclusivity at its core. Our aim is to ensure that children of all abilities can enjoy, engage, and benefit from the space. What makes this project stand out is its specific focus on stimulating the vestibular and proprioceptive senses. These two critical systems help children with balance, coordination, and body awareness.
Understanding the Vestibular and Proprioceptive Systems
The vestibular system is responsible for balance, spatial orientation, and coordination. Meanwhile, the proprioceptive system helps children understand their body position and movement. Both systems play vital roles in a child’s physical, emotional, and cognitive development.
When these systems are stimulated through movement and resistance-based activities, benefits abound. They can help improve attention, emotional regulation, motor planning, and overall well-being.

Key Features of Our Installation
This area features a nest swing, perfect for providing rhythmic movement that soothes and supports vestibular input. An inground trampoline adds an element of fun while helping children develop balance and muscle control. There’s also a teepee that offers a calming, imaginative space, and a sand pit to support sensory exploration through touch.

In addition, we’ve included musical instruments, interactive play panels, spinning items, and mushroom seats. These elements offer a range of tactile and motion-based experiences, making every part of the space engaging, accessible, and supportive of different learning and sensory needs.
A Safe and Vibrant Environment
Tying everything together is a surface of bright, colorful artificial grass. This safe, soft foundation adds vibrancy and charm to the area. It also encourages free movement and exploration, allowing children to interact with their surroundings safely.

The Importance of Outdoor Play
Engaging children in outdoor play is vital for their overall development. It allows them to socialize, express themselves, and engage in physical activity. We understand that the environment plays a key role in encouraging these behaviors.
Outdoor spaces designed with children’s needs in mind can foster creativity and imagination. They provide an outlet for children to explore the world around them and learn valuable life skills.
