Transforming Early Years Outdoor Learning
Creating Engaging EYFS Outdoor Provision for Pre-School
BACKGROUND
Bishop's Tachbrook Pre-School and Nursery
Bishop's Tachbrook Pre-School and Nursery in Leamington Spa is an early years setting dedicated to providing high-quality education for children in the Early Years Foundation Stage. While their indoor provision met EYFS standards, their outdoor space was not reaching its full potential. The nursery recognized they needed a complete transformation—an early years playground that would create engaging zones, ensure year-round usability, and unlock the full potential of outdoor learning for every child in their care.

Impact on EYFS framework alignment
OUR SOLUTION
A Comprehensive Transformation for Enhanced Early Years Outdoor Provision
Our approach addressed every challenge through carefully designed solutions that aligned with EYFS requirements while creating distinct zones for varied learning experiences.
The uneven, problematic surface was replaced with luxury artificial grass surfacing, creating a level, all-weather play area that remains usable throughout the year. A dedicated Multi-Play Grass trackway was integrated into the design, featuring short-pile artificial grass perfect for wheeled toys and active play.
Luxury Artificial Grass
01
Black and yellow artificial grass demarcates a dedicated construction zone for loose parts play. This outdoor learning space includes a Construction Wall that provides both a creative canvas for mark-making and a sturdy surface for building activities, supporting expressive arts and design alongside mathematical spatial awareness.
Construction Zone for Imaginative Play
02
The existing decked area was reimagined as a performance stage, complete with a Playground Stage Backdrop and Shade Net Pergola. This addition creates opportunities for dramatic play, storytelling, and confidence-building performances while providing essential sun protection.
Performance Stage and Creative Expression
03
The mud kitchen was transformed into a comprehensive nature area featuring bark pit surfacing with sleeper edging, creating a sensory-rich environment for exploration. The Discovery Yard addition allows children to investigate different materials, supporting their understanding of the world.
Nature Investigation Zone

Every element was installed to EYFS outdoor provision standards, creating distinct learning zones that flow naturally while maintaining sight lines for supervision and safety.
